What your small business website needs to win local customers

Your website is often the first impression a local customer gets. These are the essentials that turn a visit into a call, a booking or a quote request.

When someone nearby needs a plumber, a beauty salon or an accountant, they search on their phone, open a couple of websites and decide in seconds who to contact. Your website doesn’t need to be fancy to win that moment. It needs to make the decision easy.

Say what you do and where, straight away

The top of your homepage should answer three questions without any scrolling: what do you do, where do you do it, and how do I get in touch? “Kitchen fitting in Coventry and Warwickshire” beats a clever slogan every time, for visitors and for Google.

Make getting in touch effortless

  • A phone number that can be tapped to call on a mobile
  • A short contact form that asks only what you really need
  • Your opening hours, kept up to date
  • The areas you cover, in plain words

Design for phones first

Most local searches happen on a phone, often on the move. Text should be readable without zooming, buttons should be easy to tap, and pages should load quickly even on a patchy signal. If your site works brilliantly on a phone, it will work on a desktop too.

Show real work and real people

Photos of your actual work, your premises or your team build trust far faster than stock images. Genuine reviews and examples of past projects help people feel confident enough to pick up the phone.

Your website doesn’t need to be fancy. It needs to make the decision easy.

Help Google understand where you are

Local search is competitive, and the basics really matter:

  • Mention your town and the areas you serve naturally in your words
  • Give each main service its own page or section
  • Keep your business name, phone number and area the same everywhere online
  • Set up a Google Business Profile, and keep it matching your website

Keep it current

Out-of-date prices, old photos or last year’s opening hours quietly put people off. A site that’s easy to keep up to date is worth more than one that looks impressive on launch day and then never changes.

If your current website isn’t pulling its weight, we’re happy to take a look.
